conversation heart cookies!

last night, my best friend Allie and I made some extra cute valentines cookies! we made our own cookie dough, but you could easily use store bought dough to make them to save time. I feel like holiday sugar cookies are meant more to look pretty than to taste amazing, I don’t know, maybe I just don’t like sugar cookies! To ice the cookies, we made a royal icing, which is practically magic! it spreads out after being squeezed on and dries smooth and hard but the inside stays moist! The best part for me, was picking out what phrases to put on our conversation hearts! My favorite was “AS IF”. Yes, we got a little sassy on ours and even used some foul language – feel free to tone it down – this could be a fun project to do with your kids!!

ROYAL ICING

What you need:

  • 3 egg whites
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Put egg whites and vanilla in mixer and whip until frothy. Add powdered sugar and turn mixer to high. Beat until soft peaks form. Add food coloring if you want to and transfer into a frosting bag or bottle.

COOKIES

Roll out your dough and cut out heart shapes. Bake and cool.

To frost: outline cookie with royal icing and fill in the middle. icing will set flat,
fill in any missing holes and don’t worry about it looking lumpy, it will flatten. Once frosting starts to set, use a gel frosting to write messages on the cookies!

ENJOY!
